Finding the Epicenter

Problem: How can you locate an Earthquakes epicenter
Hypothesis: I thought the earthquake would be close to Kansas City
1. The Earthquakes epicenter is close to Nashville, Tennessee.
2.The closest city to the earthquake is Nashville it's about 50 kilometers from the epicenter
3. They would detect the earthquake first in Chicago then Houston and last Denver, Denver is the furthest and Chicago the closest
4. San Fransisco is about 3000 kilometers away from the epicenter, the difference between p and s wave arrival times would be about 4.5 minutes.
5. When the epicenter is further away the difference is greater.
6. So that you can approximately know where the epicenter is, if you do not have three locations that felt it you can't find about where the epicenter is located.
I conclude that scientists can find an earthquake by finding the areas that felt it and then they can find the epicenter without any machines.

  1. Good job Marko! By using the data you collected from the graph and using the scale on the map you were able to successfully find the epicenter and answer various questions regarding seismic activity.
