Even the Cleanest Contributes to More 'Super Bacteria',

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/11/111114152539.htm
University of Minnesota. "Even the cleanest wastewater contributes to more 'super bacteria', study finds." ScienceDaily, 14 Nov. 2011. Web. 18 Nov. 2011.

The New university of Minnesota studied that municipal waterways with even the highest cleaning and reducing waste systems still don't do a good enough job and the water, waste is dumped into is still being polluted by dangerous bacteria, known as "Super Bacterias". Normal water filters release bacteria and genes then the best ones but the levels of bacteria are similiar in water that is filtered by normal water flitering systems. The modern and best filters use anti-bacteria systems, but no the bacteria have developed and evolved and are resistant to the anti bacteria. Scientists also find out that they are found on the surface of the water in lake and rivers the waste water was dumped in.

The information presented in the article was very good and valid, I learned a lot from it. The information made sense and was presented in a great manner. I made an inquired that me need to take immediate action, because the amount of bacteria is growing and it's becoming seriously dangerous.

This article grabbed my attention because it has an interesting title, and it was on The science daily site which is valid. I learned that bacteria are a great problem in today's society, and that me need to find a way to take care of bacteria, because they can greatly destroy impact are waterways and water systems. I do believe this source is reliable because it was researched by a professor and was found on the reliable science daily site.

Title of the Lab: Where's the Evidence?

Guiding question: What are some signs that a chemical reaction has taken place?

Hypothesis: Physical change is a sign that a chemical reaction has taken place, this could include color change, appearance change and a lot of other physical changes

List of the Materials used:

Notebook Zinc CuSo4

Pencil HCI Aluminum foil

Baking soda CaCL Starch

Vinegar Na2Co3 Iodine

Sugar Heat(Lighter)

Data Table with ALL observations (You get graded on this so make sure that you have included all observations, even if you didn't write them all down. Try to think about all aspects of the reactants and the product (basically all that went on during the reaction).

Mixture Observations prediction before during after

Baking soda and vinegar

Baking soda a white powder while vinegar is a see through liquid

It’s going to slightly bubble up

Baking soda a white powder while vinegar is a see through liquid

It bubbles up and rises to the top of the test tube/ physical change

A lot less liquid than at the beginning, the color is white and stays like that

Zn + HCI

Zinc is a shiny metal, while HCI is a see though liquid

The solution is going to change color and physical appearance

Zinc is a shiny metal while HCI is a see through liquid

During the experiment the mixture started bubbling up but stayed at level,

It continued bubbling even after the first

CaCL +Na2Co3

Cuso4+Aluminum foil

Aluminum foil is has a metal surface and can change shape easily

While CuSo4 is a light blue liquid

I believe that it’s going to bubble up

Aluminum foil is has a metal surface and can change shape easily

While CuSo4 is a light blue liquid

The mixture starts bubbling up but doesn’t change its level and parts of the aluminum start breaking off

The mixture continues bubbling up but

CuSO4 turns colorless

Starch + Iodine

Starch is a white powdery flour while Iodine is a see-through liquid

I believe it’s going to change color

Starch is a white powdery flour while Iodine is a see-through liquid

The mixture turned dark black, you couldn’t see through it at all, when shook the hold tube turned black and stayed that way for a couple seconds

The mixture stayed and didn’t change at all

Sugar + Heat

Sugar is white and contains many little grains while heat is fire coming from a lighter

The sugar will change color

Sugar is white and contains many little grains and the foil is a metal surface and the heat comes from a lighter

The sugar slowly started turning yellow and melting a little while the foil was melting and making holes, the foil turned black and a lot of smoke was coming out.

It stayed the same, the foil was black while parts of the sugar were white and parts yellow.

Analysis of your results. Most of the results we got are accurate to our predictions we mostly predicted color change, and bubbling up. We knew that the reaction was over as soon as the strongest reaction finished in most cases this was first one, an example is a color changing reaction as soon as the mixture changed color the reaction was over. In all results something changed the mixture didn’t have the same physical appearance after the reaction. The products we started with were never the same as the products we finished with, they looked different and most of the times you couldn’t tell. Both chemically and physically the mixtures were different.

Conclusion :

The question was, what are sign that a reaction has taken place? Our hypothesis was correct, we stated that there was a physical difference, and there was, non of the products/mixtures stayed the same after the reaction, they all changed and looked differently, color and physical change happened. We learned that new substances are formed because there was a physical change from the outside, which made it look different but also a chemical change, because both the objects mixed and there for their chemicals mixed to form a new substance. The reactions did come to an end which we learned. The reaction came to an end , at the moment when they mixed and something started changing in their physical appearance as soon as movement and difference stopped happening in the test tube the reaction was over and that was a new substance. Through this we learned how reactions happen and how it looks from the front row, we got to see what actually happens

Further Inquiry: Think about this experiment and the data you collected. Would you make any changes to the method/procedure? Do you have any further questions?

I think this experiment was quite successful and I wouldn’t change a lot. The only thing I would change was leaving the mixtures for longer periods of time a day or two and see is there any changes. The only question I have do they ever come calm down, if the experiments bubbling does it ever stop

Temperature Differences Give Rise to Electricity

University of Oslo. "Temperature differences give rise to electricity." ScienceDaily, 9 Nov. 2011. Web. 12 Nov. 2011.

Scientists recently found out that temperature differences give rise to Electricity. Most of the heat our technology emits is not used properly and goes to waste. We lose energy this way because all this energy we could have used for propelling more technology goes to waste. Car's use only 30 percent of the energy they make and the rest goes to waste which means that energy is destroying the ozone layer. Scientists at the University of Oslo are working on a new environmentally friendly technology which will gather this heat and energy and turn it into electricity which we can use.

While I was reading this article I found out that so much energy and heat is emits and goes to waste almost 70 percent in cars. After reading the article I know that soon we will have technology which will help us reduce the waste of energy and heat which will make a great source of energy because it's environmentally friendly but it also reduces the harm we are making, and the harm that is brought to the ozone layer. I found this article on the Science Daily site which is trustworthy and releases great articles every day. While reading the article I was truly amazed by the amount of energy that is wasted, I was also satisfied that we will soon have an electricity source that doesn't harm the nature but also prevents the harming of nature.

In this video Bromine reacts with alcohol. After a while Bromine slowly turns read and then the whole jar turns red, all the contents of the jar start expanding and turning red. It's stays red for a couple seconds and then goes back to the former state.
In this example, Lithium ignites in water and burns a couple seconds. Then it stops all of a sudden after burning for a couple seconds.

When you add cesium to water, sparks come out and the reaction lasts for a couple seconds, then the reaction stops and smoke comes out for a couple for seconds then the reaction totally stops and calms down.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRmNPKVEGeQ&NR=1
The potassium sets on fire and spins around the bowl of water for a couple seconds then it ignites even further and becomes bigger, then all of a sudden it stops and then it just stops and sinks.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJslbQiYrYY&NR=1
When sodium and potassium are mixed together an explosion is created and it's a pretty high explosion, looks like a firework.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2mj-Sq2oeo&feature=related
When nitrogen is put into a swimming pool smoke/fog spreads throughout and the whole pool, then fog lifts up and spreads throughout. after a couple seconds the fog moves to one side of the pool and slowly disappears.

The aluminum foil, takes a while to react but then the reaction, heats up and foam starts coming out, it overflows and foam is coming out through all sides, this reaction lasts for a couple minutes and then calms down and settles down, and eventually stops.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Pk6s1MbszA&feature=related
When oxidation is added to a normal gummy bear it ignites and starts, burning the flames are coming off from all sides, when the gummy bear is all burned up, and there's no air for the fire to feed on it eventually turns off.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrNA8-eipGE&feature=related
The water starts swirling after all the ingredients and reactants are put in, it take a couple seconds for the reaction, to start and then it starts and lasts for a couple seconds until it stops, this was a chemical reaction between all the reactants, but there was also a physical change in appearance of the mixture after.

Prezi Reflecion

We were all asigned to make a prezi about an one of the first 20 elements, we were supposed to give basic information about the elements. I got flourine and learned a lot about it's uses and the history of this element, but i also learned a lot from the other presentations, I learned which elements can bonds, and that most elements in the same group were discovered by the same people. The thing discovered which is the most important is that elements are the building blocks of this world.

Electrode

Science Daily
October, 2011

Engineers made a electrocemical that uses a plasma for and electrode, instead of a solid piece of metal. This Plasma, unlike others is stable and can be used safely. Scientists conclude that this transfers electricity at a good rate. The important, thing scientists found out was that, in the future these could develop new pathways batteries and fuel cells design manufactoring. Scientists notice that before they can a accomplish this they need to expand on these electrodes.

I thought this article was intreseting, especially because in the future it could improve batteries, This could help us a lot because batteries would be less harmful but also last longer which is a big plus. I alao chose this article because of the place I found it whoch was the science daily site, which is can be trusted and a lot of intreseting articles come out. While reading this article I felt happy that there could be longer battery life in the future.

Putty's

During class we created silly putty's. The used common materials to create these putty's. The materials we used were, glue, water, baking soda and some sort of acid. At procedure required use to mix a moderate amount of each of these. At the beginning it was a very slimy substance, but as it had more and more contact with the air it became stiffer, but it you can still shape it. Something interesting I found out, was that it bounced when it was formed into a ball.
